MEDx Frequently Asked Questions - DICOM

Q: When I pressed the Retrieve button, this error message appeared: "Retrieve server failed to initialize the network." What does this mean and how can I resolve this?

This error message appears when MEDx is attempting to start a server process at a TCP/IP port number (i.e. the number shown in the frame labeled MEDx in the Query/Retrieve panel of DICOM Defaults) but this particular port number is unexpectedly already occupied by another process.

Try the following options until the issue is resolved, preferably in the order shown:

  1. Simply make the port vacant and then try the Retrieve button again. You can do this as follows. The port is likely being occupied by the program called medxstorage. Find and kill all processes called medxstorage. If the error is still appearing, you can use some system commands to determine the process that is occupying the port. If this is a process that is OK to terminate, do so and try the Retrieve button again. If you do not wish to terminate that process, use option 2 below.

  2. If terminating medxstorage does not resolve the issue, an alternative to resolving the issue is to change the port number you originally specified (in the frame labeled MEDx in the Query/Retrieve panel of DICOM Defaults). To do this, you will need to exit the Query/Retrieve dialog box, make and Apply the change in DICOM Defaults, and re-enter the Query/Retrieve dialog box. You will of course also need to make the necessarymodifications on your DICOM server so that it recognizes thenew port number being used by the Query/Retrieve tool in MEDx.

Note: The medxstorage program is automatically killed every time MEDx is exited normally by using the Exit All menu option. If this option is not used, the subsequent MEDx session may generate the error above when the Retrieve button is pressed. Therefore, use the Exit All menu option whenever possible.
